Mid Autumn Lantern Festival @ MBKS

September 21st, 2008 | 4 Comments | Posted in Event Coverage

Haven’t been shooting lately due to work and left this blog un-updated. So finally, there is an interesting event over at MBKS, the Kuching South Council Headquater. It stated in the title, its the Mid Autumn Lantern Festival although the official date is over but still,  its “autumn”. Anyway, didn’t shoot much photos. it was very crowded and I did not squeeze through the crowd like I usually do. Feeling kinda lazy this time. The weather was hot too, I tried not to move around and stayed in same spot.

There werre many programmes for night, drum performance, dancing, wushu and also singing. Didn’t shoot all those. I stand aside and enjoyed the show instead. A great evening to kill the time.

Martial Art Display 2008

August 24th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Event Coverage

This is probably the last event inconjunction with month long Kuching City Day celebration. The event, Martial Art Display 2008 was held at the MBKS Hockey Stadium. It was raining heavily earlier that day but fortunate it stopped raining during the event.

The event is supported by the large crowd of taichi members both young and old. Other participants includes the ITF Taekwondo, Wushu and Silat. All demonstrated their skills and action on the field. Then followed by individual and group demonstration.

Taekwondo as expectedly demonstrated their pattern movements and also breaking techniques. As a taekwondo member myself, I do find them rather “lembik” or in english - softy. Its easy to earn a blackbelt in ITF taekwondo. You can see a member as young as 12 years old having a blackbelt.

As for some photography comments, its quite challenging to shoot fast movements. I get to try out some ideas of mine. but didn’t work out as I expected. Could have been better if its daytime.

Anyway, for more photos.. read more.

The 7th Lunar Month

August 7th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Event Coverage

An unusual photography event for some, but I still find some photographers making their appearance there. I am also one of them. The event took place near the so called “Seven Stories Flat”, at a small temple. This event is held annually to welcome and make entertainment for the “good brothers and sisters” who are having their holiday on human world during this time of the year, the 7th Lunar Month.

Depending on some people, it may be a taboo to visit these places but for others, it can be an opportunity of blessings. Treat the spiritis well and you will get blessings from them in return. I am there to experience the ceremony and taking photos thats all.

Kuching City Day Parade 2008

August 1st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Event Coverage

In conjunction with the Kuching City Day, the annual parade is held once again. This year is hosted by the South City Council. I learned a lesson last year, not to shoot the parade when they’re on parade. Instead, shoot the parade when they’re not on parade. Meaning, the best time to shoot is when they’re gathering up and getting ready for the parade. So most likely they will fool and play around, thats where you can capture all the mood and fun.

Shangyin Oriental Music Concert

Oriental Instrumentalist on stage

Oriental Instrumentalist on stage

I was given the opportunity to make a coverage of the Oriental Music concert which was organized by Shangyin Music. The event was held at the Tourism Complex on the 27th July 2008.

The music and songs played by the chinese instrumentalist were indeed mezmerising. I was personally amazed by the young erhu player. Erhu is the so called “chinese violin” as shown in the photo above played by the young lat.

The evening event could have been better if they have made some introduction towards the equipment played and of course an introduction of the performers.

Anyway, I was still impress with the performance and its certainly a motivation for myself and my music lesson.

Mini Cosplay Con (KAA Event)

July 27th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Event Coverage

A charity event organized by the Kuching Autistic Association was held at Boulevard Shopping Mall Kuching.  Well the main attraction would be the cosplayers. I would regard it more as a mini anime convention as it seem to be the main highlight there.

Took some photos of the nutty and wacky cosplayers in action. Mostly candid shots.

Deity Kuan Gong Procession

Kwan Gong

In Trance Kwan Gong

Despite the huge down pour during the event, it didn’t stop me from shooting this sacred event which was held behind Hock Lee centre. I have always wanted to shoot photos of people going in trance of deity.  I could have taken more photos if I went earlier and got myself a nice angle. I had to squeeze myself through the crowd. Good thing people still respect media photographers.

Spring Bridal and Imaging Fair 2008

Model

Model

This year, the event is held at The Spring Mall. The bridal fashion show was showcased for 2 days. Went there for a shooting spree. The models were gorgeous I must say. Lots of photographers. I would say about 30 to 40 of them excluding those compact camera users.

Main challenge was that there were too many lightings. Spotlights, stage lights and backlight from the window panels behind. Still it was a pretty interesting event and again it was another great experience shooting such event.

Canon Photography Workshop

September 9th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Event Coverage

I learned that most of the workshop done by Canon is boring. Now that I experienced it, yes it is long hours of boredom. Is very obvious their objective is to increase more people to buy canon products. Kept on comparing Canon products to Nikon. White side versus the Dark Side. I am more familiar with Nikon products as I am a Nikon user myself. From what I see, throughout the workshop, they mentioned on Nikon disadvantages and Canon advantages from it. They never mention the downside of Canon where Nikon are superior in their own ways.

I was one of the person who presented there on behalf of the Sarawak Photo-Art Society. Well only 15 mins presentation on the website I developed for the society.
